Pegbox™ Manual
A Workspace for the sounds a series or a film keeps reusing — not a catalog like Soundly or SoundQ, but where you administer and hunt down your project's own repeat favorites: organize them as picture tiles, audition at matched loudness, and spot the one you want onto the Pro Tools cursor with a single key. A 16-pad sampler turns any recording into a playable instrument; an iPad app mirrors the whole thing over Wi-Fi — and it's all on your own files, nothing in the cloud.
Welcome to Pegbox
Two tabs are the whole point. Workspace is where you administer the sounds a series or a film keeps coming back to — the recurring room tone, the door, the whoosh that shows up every episode — organized as picture tiles and spotted to the Pro Tools cursor with one key. Sampler turns any recording into a 16-pad performance instrument. Four more tabs add optional AI tools — SFX generation, voice, isolation, transcription — that run on your own ElevenLabs key if you want them. Nothing here needs an account with Pegbox itself: your project's data is a file on your own Mac. Pegbox goes online only to reach the providers you've keyed in yourself and, for the license key, Gumroad — see Licensing.
Who it's for
Built for film, TV, and commercial sound editors and designers who cut in Pro Tools and keep landing on the same signature sounds across a series or a film. Also built for Foley artists: cut a performance once, and it goes straight into your own Workspace library — footsteps, cloth, prop hits — ready to hunt down and re-spot into Pro Tools on the next project instead of re-performing it from scratch. And for sound-design performers generally, who trigger repeated hits (typing, texting, gunfire) and currently do it on a hardware sampler. It isn't a catalog tool like Soundminer, Soundly, or SoundQ — those manage huge commercial libraries you search. Workspace is smaller and more personal on purpose: it's where you administer and hunt down the specific sounds you already know by heart on this project, so the one you want is a glance and a keystroke away.
Quick start
- Drop a folder of sounds onto the Workspace sidebar.Pegbox builds a category from it on the spot — that's this project's Workspace started.
- Press a tile to audition it, then S to spot it.Pegbox finds your open Pro Tools session on its own and places the sound at the cursor on the selected track.
- Load a recording into the Sampler. It auto-slices into 16 pads you can play from the keyboard, a MIDI controller, or the iPad.
- Optional — add your own API key(s).Settings (⌘,) ▸ Accounts or ▸ Workspace, for AI icons, SFX/Voice generation, isolation, transcription, or all four — full ElevenLabs steps under SFX Generator.
Installing
Pegbox needs macOS 15 or later and runs natively on Apple silicon and Intel Macs. Open the downloaded Pegbox.dmg and drag Pegbox onto the Applications shortcut beside it. Pegbox is signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple, with the notarization ticket attached to the app itself, so Gatekeeper accepts it even on a Mac that's offline. The first time you open it, macOS asks you to confirm opening an app downloaded from the internet — click Open.
Pro Tools: one-key spotting onto a named track, through Pro Tools Scripting, needs Pro Tools 2025.6 or later; Pegbox is verified with Pro Tools 2026.4. With an earlier version there is nothing to set: the first spot finds that Pro Tools doesn't have the Scripting spot commands, goes out through the Legacy Spot API (Apple Events) instead, and so does every spot after it until Pro Tools is relaunched — Settings ▸ Pro Tools says so. Binding sounds to tracks needs Pro Tools 2023.9 or later; before that a bound sound lands on the selected track and the status line tells you its binding was ignored, and a whole stem set can't be spotted in one go (spot or drag its stems one at a time). Drag-and-drop works with any version, and so does transport control over MMC or HUI.
What macOS asks the first time
Each of these appears once. Declining one only turns off the part of Pegbox that needs it.
| Documents folder | At first launch. Your library is created in ~/Documents, so macOS asks whether Pegbox may access files in your Documents folder. |
| Local network | At first launch, even without an iPad: Pegbox starts advertising itself to Pegbox Remote right away. The prompt reads "Lets Pegbox Remote on your iPad find this Mac and mirror the Workspace." Declining only affects the iPad. |
| Microphone | The first time you record a reference take for Speech-to-Speech in Voice Generator ("Record a reference take for Speech-to-Speech."). |
| Automation of Pro Tools | The first time Pegbox spots through the Legacy Spot API, which sends Pro Tools an Apple Event ("Spot audio onto the selected Pro Tools track at the cursor."). If it was declined, the next spot opens System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Automation so you can allow it. |
Help in the app
Help ▸ Pegbox Help (⌘?) shows the ElevenLabs key steps and the support address. Help ▸ Pegbox Manual opens this manual.
Licensing & the Free Version
Pegbox is a one-time purchase from Gumroad, unlocked with the license key on your Gumroad receipt. Without a key it runs as the free version: every feature works, with limits on how much you can add.
| Categories | 3 |
| Sounds per category | 8 |
| Sampler kits | 2 |
| Filled pads per kit | 2 |
| AI tools | 4 successful runs each of SFX Generator, Voice Generator, Voice Isolator, and Transcribe. A run that fails or that you cancel doesn't count. |
| Pegbox Remote (iPad) | Needs a license. An iPad connecting to an unlicensed Mac is turned away before any pairing prompt, and says the Mac isn't unlocked. |
Nothing you already have is hidden or locked. A library bigger than the limits — imported, or built while licensed — plays and spots as always; the limits only apply to adding more. Reaching one opens the Unlock sheet, which says which limit it was.
Unlocking
Paste the key from your Gumroad receipt in either of two places: Settings ▸ License, or the sheet from the app menu's Unlock Pegbox… item (it reads Licence… once Pegbox is unlocked). Click Unlock; Buy Pegbox opens the Gumroad page. Unlocking needs an internet connection that one time: Pegbox sends the key to Gumroad's license check and asks whether it's valid for Pegbox.
Three Macs per key
One key unlocks Pegbox on 3 Macs (3 per seat on a multi-seat license). Each Mac you unlock counts toward that. The license is kept in the Mac's keychain, so reinstalling Pegbox on the same Mac doesn't count again. A key whose Macs are all in use is refused, and that refusal doesn't use up another place; the message tells you to email support, who can reset it — info@dbsoundlabs.com. Remove from This Mac (Settings ▸ License, or the same sheet) forgets the key on this Mac but doesn't give its place back, so unlocking again counts as another Mac; ask support when you move to a new machine.
The monthly check
About every 30 days, when the Mac is online, Pegbox asks Gumroad about the key again. If the Mac is offline, or Gumroad can't be reached or answers with an error, nothing changes and Pegbox asks again later — an offline Mac is never locked out. Check Again, in Settings ▸ License or the license sheet, runs the check at once and says what it found: that Gumroad confirmed the key, or that it couldn't be reached and nothing changed.
Refunds and disabled keys
When Gumroad answers that a key was refunded, charged back, or switched off, or that it doesn't exist for Pegbox, that check returns the Mac to the free version and says so in the status bar. Nothing in your library is deleted; the free limits apply to adding again.
The App Shell
Six tabs live in four slots. Workspace and Sampler each get a solo button; the four optional AI tools pair up into two stacked "drawers" — same footprint as a solo tab, split top and bottom.
Pops that tab — solo or either half of a drawer — into its own floating window with no tab bar, sized to match the window it came from. It shares the same live session as the main window, so a generation or recording in progress stays in sync; click the same tab again while its window is open just brings that window forward.
Drop a file directly onto the Transcribe or Voice Isolator half of its drawer and Pegbox switches to that tab and starts the job immediately — no need to open the drawer first.
| Tab | Kind | What it's for |
|---|---|---|
| Workspace | Core | Administer this project's recurring sounds — categories, tiles, the Pegboard, and Spot to Pro Tools. |
| Sampler | Core | 16-pad kits: auto-slice a recording, trigger by keyboard/MIDI, record a performed take. |
| SFX Generator | Optional · BYOK | Text-prompt sound effect generation. |
| Voice Generator | Optional · BYOK | Text-to-speech and Speech-to-Speech re-voicing. |
| Voice Isolator | Optional · BYOK | Strip noise/music from a file and keep the clean vocal. |
| Transcribe | Optional · BYOK | Speaker-labeled transcription with a follow-along player. |
Workspace
Where you administer this project's recurring favorites: categories on the left, tiles in the middle, and the one keystroke that matters most — S to spot the selected sound onto a Pro Tools track.
Soundly and SoundQ manage huge commercial libraries you search. Workspace is deliberately smaller and more personal — it's built for administering and hunting down the sounds a specific series or film keeps reusing, so the one you want is a glance and a keystroke away, not a search away.
Library & files
Sounds live in one library package — by default ~/Documents/Pegbox Library.pegboxlibrary. Use File ▸ New / Open / Open Recent / Import / Export to work with more than one. Double-clicking a library in the Finder opens it too: Pegbox asks first, saves the one that's open, and relaunches into the other. Backups are kept outside the library, in a folder per library under File ▸ Reveal Backups Folder; each one's Library.txt names the library it belongs to, and Clean Up tells you when backups of libraries you no longer have are taking up space.
Sidebar
The Pegboard sits at the top as a pinboard row; your category tree follows below it — collapsible, color-coded, drag to reorder or nest, right-click for New Category or New Series. Series (collections) list separately beneath the regular tree. Drop a Finder folder onto the sidebar to build a category straight from it, or link it as a watched folder.
Views & search
Three views, one per category: ⌘1 Tiles (icons only), ⌘2 Stack, ⌘3 List. Stack and List share the same resizable, sortable column table, modeled on Pro Tools' own Workspace browser; Stack adds a file-type icon per row. Right-click any column header for the full list, grouped: Measured (Length, Rate, Peak, RMS, First Hit), Yours (Tags, Filename, Folder, Alts, Also In), Embedded (Description, Category, Keywords, Library, Designer, Notes, Originator, Project, Scene, Take, Show, Mic, Unique ID, Fingerprint), and Music (Key, Tempo, Time Sig, Author) — that last group is editable right in the row, same fields as the Edit Sound sheet.
⌘F searches the open category. ⌘⇧F — Search Everywhere — searches the whole library at once and behaves exactly like any other category: audition, spot, drag, and right-click all work straight on the results. A Filter menu narrows to All Sounds, ★ Favorites, or a specific tag.
Long cues & music metadata
Select exactly one sound in Stack view and a full-width, high-resolution waveform opens above the table — built fresh for that one clip, so a two-minute music cue doesn't just look like a flat blur the way its row thumbnail does. Click anywhere on it to preview from that point. Click and drag to mark a range instead: a highlighted band appears with a handle on each edge, and the exact time range prints next to the sound's name (14.92s – 24.88s, with an ✕ to clear it).
Drag that band out and you get just that segment as its own new file, dropped wherever you aim it. Press S / SPOT instead, and the whole file lands on the track with its clip bounded to the same range — so a music editor can find the exact passage that fits the picture inside a much longer cue and place it without ever trimming the source file by hand. Tempo reads straight from a file's own embedded metadata where a library provides it; when a Pro Tools Workspace bounce only wrote the raw tick data behind a tempo, Pegbox derives the BPM itself rather than leave the column blank.
Stem sets
A cue delivered as separate stems — drums, bass, a full mix — becomes one tile. Pegbox groups them automatically when files share a sample rate, length, and BWF timestamp plus a common cue name, or from a folder of similar-length bounces. By hand: Group Stem Sets or Import Folder as Stem Set… on a category, or select several tiles and choose Group N as Stems; Ungroup Stems on a stem-set tile reverses it, giving the tiles back as they were — icons, tags, stars and Pegboard pins included. The tiles have to be in one category to be grouped, a backup snapshot is taken first either way, and Find matches a cue by its stems' names too. A joined L/R stereo file and its mono pair count as one stem, not two.
The live stems play summed together on one player, leveled by the mix — or all stems together when none was delivered as a dedicated mix. Click a stem to solo it, ⌘-click to add more to the solo. A stem-set tile gets its own face, badge, and border in the grid; dragging one out delivers every stem file at once, or just the highlighted stems for a subset.
SPOT on the cue as delivered places the mix and every stem, each on its own bound track, all at the cursor, all-or-nothing, cropped identically so they stay in sync. With stems muted or soloed it places what you hear — the live stems only, without the mix. A cue set to spot at its loudest hit puts its sync point (the orange marker in the Stack) on the cursor, stems still in lock — this needs the Pro Tools Scripting link connected (Settings ▸ Pro Tools), since it's placing several clips on several tracks at once. Spotting a single stem by itself, from its own row's right-click menu, works over either route.
Selection & audition
Finder-style selection — click, ⌘-click, ⇧-range, a marquee drag, ⌘A, arrow keys. Tiles play the instant you press down (hovering pre-decodes the file, so the click itself is near-instant — the status bar shows measured trigger latency). Beds audition loudness-matched at a fixed −32 dBFS RMS reference, starting at a random point in the file; action sounds play at their natural level, starting right at the transient with a 10 ms pre-roll. Space repeats the last tile, Esc or a click elsewhere stops it. ⌘Z / ⌘⇧Z undo and redo every library edit.
Spot to Pro Tools
This is the feature the rest of Workspace exists to support. Pegbox finds your open Pro Tools session on its own and remembers where its Audio Files folder lives. Press S, click the frosted SPOT lip that appears across the bottom of the selected tile, or choose Spot at Cursor from its right-click menu.
Spot to a range of tracks
A category, a subcategory, a Sampler kit, the Pegboard, and a single tile can each be bound to an ordered list of tracks — not just one — via Spot to Track…. A subcategory inherits its parent's list until it gets its own. Which list applies follows the same order as before: the tile's own, else the Pegboard's (if spotted from there), else the category's, else whatever track is selected in Pro Tools right now.
| Stagger across tracks | On by default: a spot takes whichever free track in the list has gone longest since its last clip — an empty track first — so consecutive scenes step down the range instead of stacking up on one. Turn off Settings ▸ Pro Tools ▸ Stagger spots across bound tracks to go back to always taking the first track in the list with room. |
| No overwriting | A spot skips any bound track that already has a clip at the cursor, and is happy to use a gap between two existing clips — nothing ever gets pasted over. |
| Crop to fit | If no track in the list has room for the whole clip, it's shortened to end right where the next clip begins — never to less than half a second. Only the copy landing in Pro Tools is cropped; your source file is untouched. |
| Clip names | A spotted clip is named after the tile itself. Type your own text into Clip prefix in the tile editor and it still leads the name — leave it blank and nothing is prepended. |
Two ways to reach Pro Tools
Settings ▸ Pro Tools ▸ Spot using switches the route, independently of whichever transport protocol drives Play/Stop/Rec: Pro Tools Scripting names the track and time directly and skips a bound track that already has a clip at the cursor — it also converts a file at a different sample rate, handles files Pro Tools splits into L/R, and re-spots a file that's already in the session. It falls back to Legacy automatically whenever the Scripting link isn't connected, or the connected Pro Tools is older than 2025.6. A bound sound spotted while the link is down lands on the selected track, and the status line says its binding was ignored. When a sound is bound to a mix of mono and stereo tracks, it only takes a track of its own width as long as one is bound. Legacy Spot API is the same Apple Event Soundly and Soundminer use: select the first free bound track, then spot at the cursor.
Spot at the loudest hit
A door, a gunshot, an impact — set a category's Spot Clip At to Loudest Hit (right-click the category; Start is the default) and every sound in it spots with its loudest transient on the cursor instead of its first sample. Override any single tile the same way from its own right-click menu, under Spot At. The hit is found automatically; in Stack view, an orange marker on the waveform shows exactly where — drag it to move it, and a reset button returns it to the detected point once you have. On the Scripting route, the spotted clip also carries Pro Tools' own sync point at that spot, so Pro Tools' own Spot dialog and Grid can reuse it later.
A clip group carries its own sync point when one was set inside Pro Tools itself. A group tile with one spots its bounce at that point automatically — unless its category (or the tile itself) is set to Start, and a marker you've dragged by hand in Pegbox always wins over the group's own.
From there: loudness match writes a peak-safe gain-matched copy (skipped for action-sound categories), and the insert chain bakes in your plug-ins if it's active, falling back to dry if a plug-in can't handle the file. A clip group spots its attached stereo bounce, never the group itself, and an automation-permission error opens System Settings for you automatically.
Pegboard
A pinboard of references — sounds and Sampler kits — that behaves like any other category: drag to reorder, audition, spot, right-click. Pin to Pegboard (or Pin N to Pegboard for a selection) pins a reference; unpinning, or even deleting the original sound, never touches the other. Bind the whole board to a track with Spot to Track… on the board itself, and anything spotted from it inherits that binding unless the tile has its own. Clear Pegboard empties the board only — the sounds stay exactly where they were.
Icons
Every tile can carry an AI-generated picture. Choose a look per category — Realistic (a photoreal image built from the file's name), flat Action icons, or plain color Pads — or override it per tile with your own prompt. Regenerate one tile, or an entire selection at once; a batch regenerate shows the cost before it spends anything. Pick the image provider in Settings ▸ Workspace: OpenAI GPT Image Mini (~$0.005/icon) or Google Gemini (~$0.04/icon) — both bring-your-own-key. A tile with no picture yet shows its file name instead of sitting blank, even in a category with tile names turned off — and Regenerate Icon (the plain, non-AI redraw) now covers those iconless audio tiles too, single or across a selection.
Right-click a tile (or a whole selection) and choose Choose Picture from Album… — or the Album… button next to Icon Style when editing a sound — to skip generation entirely. Pegbox ships with its own curated picture album, laid out just like Workspace itself: categories down the left, pictures on the right, its own search field. Click a picture and it lands on the tile immediately, free, no API key required.
Watched folders
Link a category to a Finder folder and Pegbox mirrors new files, moves, and renames into it automatically — it never deletes anything on your side. This is separate from the Transcribe tab's watch folder, which lives in Settings ▸ Folders.
Backups & recovery
Pegbox snapshots your library on its own — once the first time it holds real data, then hourly, and again right before anything that touches a lot of files at once (a folder import, a sync, a relink pass). Ten snapshots are kept. File ▸ Back Up Now (⌘⇧B) forces one, with icons, any time. Each library keeps its snapshots in its own folder, named for the library's ID, under ~/Library/Application Support/Pegbox/Backups; File ▸ Reveal Backups Folder opens the one for the library that's open.
A missing file or an unplugged drive never causes Pegbox to quietly start you over. It offers the newest good copy it can find — a .bak, then a dated snapshot — or an empty start, and lets you choose.
Category context menu
Right-click a category (or a multi-selection of them) in the sidebar. Every command works on the whole selection at once where that makes sense — the label switches to “for N” to say so.
| Window & structure | |
| Open in New Window | Opens just this category in its own floating window, live-synced with the main one. |
| Rename | — |
| New Subcategory | Adds an empty subcategory nested under this one. |
| Expand / Collapse | Only shown once the category has subcategories — folds its tree away or opens it back up. |
| Watched folder | |
| Link to Folder… | Mirrors a Finder folder into this category. Shown only while it isn't linked yet. |
| Sync Now / Reveal Linked Folder / Clear Ignored Items / Unlink Folder | Shown once linked: force a sync pass, jump to the folder in Finder, forget any files you've told Pegbox to ignore, or unlink it entirely. |
| Spotting | |
| [Track list button] | Shows the category's current track binding — its own list, an inherited one, or “At the cursor” — and opens the track-list picker to change it. |
| Spot Clip At ▸ Start / Loudest Hit | Sets whether every sound in this category spots from its first sample or its detected loudest transient. |
| Maintenance | |
| Join L / R Pairs as Stereo | Merges any split-mono pairs in the category into single stereo tiles. |
| Group Stem Sets | Auto-detects cues delivered as separate stems in this category and groups each into one tile. |
| Import Folder as Stem Set… | Hand-picks a Finder folder of stems to group as one tile, when auto-detection isn't enough. |
| Read Metadata & Fingerprints | Re-reads embedded BWF/ID3 metadata and recomputes the audio fingerprint for every sound in the category (or selection). |
| Appearance & behavior | |
| Color… | Opens the category-color picker — ten named swatches, or a custom color. |
| Convert to Series / Convert to Category | Toggles this category between a regular category and a Series (collection). |
| Icon Style Prompt… | Edits the custom AI prompt this category's icon style uses. |
| Tile Style | Picks which icon style the category's tiles use by default; Add Icon Style… at the bottom makes a new reusable one. |
| Playback | From a random point (ambiences) / from the beginning / from the first transient (one-shots) — how tiles in this category start auditioning. |
| Show tile names | Toggles the name label under each tile in Tiles view. |
| Regenerate All Icons (AI) | Batch-regenerates every tile's icon. Disabled for an empty category or one using a non-AI style (Pad Colors, Glyphs). |
| Order & delete | |
| Move Up / Move Down | Reorders this category among its siblings. |
| Move to Top Level | Only shown on a subcategory — promotes it out of its parent. |
| Delete… | Deletes the category outright if it's empty; otherwise asks first. |
Tile context menu
Right-click a tile — or a multi-selection — for this menu. Icon and Sampler actions are batch-aware; spotting, relinking, and clipboard actions only appear for a single tile, since they don't make sense for several at once.
| Spotting | |
| Spot at Cursor / Spot to Clip List | Places the sound at the Pro Tools cursor, or into the Clip List instead. A clip group spots its attached bounce, never the group. |
| [Track list button] | Single tile only. Shows this tile's own track binding and opens the picker — a tile's own list beats the Pegboard's, which beats the category's. |
| Spot At ▸ Follow Category / Start / Loudest Hit | Overrides the category's spot-anchor for just this tile (or selection). “Follow Category” shows what that currently resolves to. |
| Clip groups & bounces | |
| Attach Bounce as Preview… / Use a Tile as Preview… | On a clip group: sets which stereo bounce actually plays and spots when you audition or spot the group. |
| Go to Bounce Tile: “name” / Remove Preview | Jumps to the tile currently attached as the group's bounce, or detaches it. |
| Go to Parent Group | On an ordinary tile linked to a group: jumps to the group it's the bounce for. |
| Link to Group as Its Bounce… / Link to a Different Group… | Attaches this tile as a clip group's bounce. |
| Sampler & Pegboard | |
| Send to Sampler | Drops the tile (or selection) onto the first empty pads of a kit — shown with its free-pad count — or starts a brand-new kit. |
| Pin to Pegboard / Unpin from Pegboard / Remove from Pegboard | Adds or removes a reference on the Pegboard. The sound itself is never touched. |
| Keyboard Shortcut… | A pinned tile only — assigns a key that triggers this sound directly, from anywhere. |
| Group N as Stems | Several tiles selected — groups them into one stem-set tile. See Stem sets. |
| Ungroup Stems | A stem-set tile only — reverses the grouping back into separate tiles. |
| Favorites, files & icon style | |
| Add to Favorites / Remove Favorite | Toggles the ★. |
| Relink File… | Offline tiles only — point the tile back at its file. |
| Icon Style | Follow Category, any individual style, or Add Icon Style… — overrides the category's icon look for just this tile (or selection). |
| Identity & icon | |
| Rename | — |
| Regenerate Icon (AI) / Regenerate Icon | Redraws the AI picture, or the plain non-AI redraw for a tile with no icon yet. A batch selection also offers Regenerate with Shared Prompt… and shows the cost before it spends anything. |
| Generate AI Picture for This Tile | Series/collection tiles only — forces an AI picture even where the category normally wouldn't make one. |
| Also in N other places | Jumps to every other category or Series that references this same file. |
| Choose Picture from Album… | Picks a built-in picture instead of generating one — free, no key. |
| Set Pad Color… | Sets a flat color for the Pad Colors icon style. |
| Copy Icon to Clipboard / Paste Icon from Clipboard | Single tile only. |
| Details & organize | |
| Edit… | Opens the full Edit Sound sheet — name, tags, icon, metadata. |
| Show File in Finder | — |
| New Category from Sound / New Subcategory Here | Spins the selection off into a brand-new category, top-level or nested right here. |
| Move To | Moves the selection into any other category. |
| Remove Sound | Removes the sound from this category. Hidden on the Pegboard itself, where “Remove from Pegboard” above is the safe unpin action instead. |
Stem context menu
Right-click one stem's row under a stem-set cue for this menu instead.
| Spotting & Sampler | |
| Play “Stem” Alone | Auditions just this stem, on its own. |
| Spot “Stem” at Cursor / to Clip List | Spots this one stem by itself, rather than the whole cue. |
| Send to Sampler | Same as a regular tile — first empty pads of a kit, or a new one. |
| Mix & solo | |
| Solo in the Cue / Mute in the Cue | On any stem but the mix: solos or mutes it within the cue's playback (Unmute once muted). |
| Use as the Full Mix / Not the Full Mix | Designates this stem as the cue's reference mix — or un-designates the current one. |
| Play the Full Mix | On the mix stem itself: plays it alone. |
| File & set | |
| Rename… | Renames this stem — its label in the lanes and rows, not the file on disk. |
| Reveal in Finder / Copy File Path | — |
| Remove from Stem Set | Pulls this stem out of the set; the file itself is untouched. |
| Drag | Delivers just this stem's file — or, if you've highlighted several stems first, all of them at once, in the cue's order. |
Sampler
16-pad kits, sliced from your own recordings, triggered from the keyboard, MIDI, or an iPad — and spotted back into Pro Tools the moment you're happy with a take.
Build as many kits as you like; every kit is exactly 16 pads in a 4×4 grid, sized so all of them are always visible — the pad grid never scrolls. Click a kit in the sidebar to open it, double-click to rename, right-click for Duplicate, Pin to Pegboard, Spot to Track…, Generate Pad Pictures…, reorder, or Delete Kit.
| Control | Range | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Threshold | −60…0 dBFS | Draggable line on the waveform — only transients above it become slices. |
| Sensitivity | 0–1 | How readily a transient counts as a new hit. |
| Min gap | 10–400 ms | Minimum spacing between slices — drop it low for fast, tightly-packed hits. |
| Decay | 0–1500 ms | Length of each slice after its transient; 0 auto-extends to the next hit. |
| Pre-roll | 0–50 ms | How far before the detected transient a slice starts. |
| Volume | fader | Pad-level playback gain, independent of slicing. |
Drag across the waveform to restrict auto-slicing to one region. Zoom 1–64× with the wheel, pinch, or the zoom buttons, and Fit re-zooms to the whole waveform. Each numbered slice can be Disabled, Re-sliced on its own, or removed with Delete Slice; ⌥-click a slice to split it.
Playback per pad
Random never repeats the same slice twice in a row. Round Robin cycles slices in order. One Shot plays the whole file start to finish — tap again to stop it early. Choke cuts a pad's own previous hit the instant it's struck again; Boost applies automatic makeup gain (up to +30 dB) to bring a quiet sample's peak up to −1 dBFS, shown live as it's applied.
Triggering
Keyboard: Z X C V / A S D F / Q W E R / 1 2 3 4 map to pads 1–16, active only while the Sampler tab is open. The transport keys match Pro Tools: Space stops a take that's recording or playing — otherwise it plays the last take, or rolls Pro Tools when nothing's been recorded yet; numeric-keypad 3 starts and stops recording; Esc silences every pad at once. Mouse press-to-play, iPad touch, and any MIDI controller all work at the same time — the Sampler is 16-voice polyphonic. Turn on MIDI Learn in Settings ▸ Sampler, and it arms a pad; the next note you play assigns it and auto-advances to the next pad, finishing itself after all 16.
Recording a take
Record with an optional Pro-Tools-synced pre-roll (via PTSL), so you can perform to picture with Pro Tools' own transport rolling under you. Without PTSL connected, it records straight from the cursor and warns you. Takes cap at 300 seconds and only the most recent one is kept on disk; a stereo take that turns out to be identical on both channels folds to mono automatically. Spot Take works even mid-recording — it stops the recorder, waits for you to pick a track, then spots.
If you're recording through a Loopback device, dial in Settings ▸ Sampler ▸ Spot offset once to compensate for round-trip latency, so a performed take lands exactly where you played it. This only affects Sampler takes — not Workspace spotting.
Pegbox Remote & the CLI
Two more ways into the same library and the same sampler — a free-standing iPad app, and a command line for macro tools like SoundFlow.
Pegbox Remote (iPad)
Requirements: an iPad — Pegbox Remote is iPad-only — running iPadOS 17 or later, on the same network as the Mac, and a licensed copy of Pegbox on the Mac (see Licensing); an unlicensed Mac turns the iPad away and the iPad says why. Getting it: Pegbox Remote comes from the App Store — [App Store link].
Finds the Mac automatically over Wi-Fi — Bonjour, zero setup, nothing to type. It mirrors the same categories, tiles, and icons as Workspace (grid/stack/list, search, favorites): tap a tile to audition it through the Mac's own output, tap SPOT to send it to the Pro Tools cursor, double-tap to rename, tag, favorite, or regenerate its icon. The Sampler comes along too — kits on the left, the same 4×4 pads, touch-down triggers, and a Stop All. Latency is tuned for auditioning and scene-Foley performance; for music-tight timing, a wired MIDI pad still wins.
Pair it once — the first connection asks you to confirm the pairing — then manage paired iPads from Settings ▸ Remote, which also shows this Mac's Bonjour name and lets you Forget a device.
CLI & SoundFlow
A small command-line entry point (--spot, --list) forwards spot requests into the already-running app by stable slot ID, so macro tools like SoundFlow or Keyboard Maestro can trigger a specific library sound without opening Pegbox at all.
SFX Generator
Describe a sound, get up to four takes, keep the one that works.
Getting your ElevenLabs API key
This — and Voice Generator, Voice Isolator, and Transcribe — needs your own ElevenLabs key. These are the exact steps from Help ▸ Pegbox Help in the app — open that menu any time you need them again.
- In ElevenLabs, open your profile menu ▸ API Keys ▸ Create API Key.elevenlabs.io/app/settings/api-keys — Pegbox's own Help dialog has a button that opens this page directly.
- Name it — "Pegbox" is fine — and grant it access to every product below.Skip one and only the tool it belongs to won't work; the rest of Pegbox is unaffected.
- Copy the key and paste it into Settings ▸ Accounts.⌘, opens Settings; it saves the moment you paste it in.

info@dbsoundlabs.com — also printed at the bottom of the Help dialog and under Settings ▸ About.
Type a prompt — Return submits, ⇧Return starts a new line — and press Generate (⌘↩). Takes land under "Pick the Takes to Keep" as their own filled-waveform cards as soon as each finishes, with Play, ✕ to discard that one, and Keep; Discard all clears every take at once.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Auto Duration | Off switches to a manual 0.5–30 s slider. |
| Influence | How closely the take follows your prompt (where the provider supports it). |
| Loop | Requests a seamlessly-tiling take (where supported). |
| Takes | 1–4 per generation; the button shows the credit cost as “N× credits.” |
| Boost | Audition-only peak normalize — never changes the file you actually keep. |
Keep conforms the take to 48 kHz / 24-bit: non-looped takes fold to mono, looped takes stay stereo so they tile cleanly. It's named from a four-word slug of your prompt and added to a searchable history capped at 200 takes. From that history you can drag any row straight onto a Pro Tools track or into Finder, spot it, show it in Finder, toggle MONO on a stereo file, or remove the row — the file on disk is untouched either way.
Voice Generator
Text-to-speech, or re-voice an existing performance — same tab, a segmented switch at the top picks the mode.
Pick a voice from the searchable picker (filter by Created by me / Cloned / Professional / Generated / Premade, sort A–Z or Newest), choose a model, type your line.
Record a reference take in the tab — pick your input device, watch the live level meter, preview before you commit.
Drop or choose a reference file and Pegbox re-voices it (Speech-to-Speech) instead of generating from text.
On that model, a tag grid appears — 10 emotion tags, 8 delivery tags ([happy], [whispers]…) — click to drop one into your text, color-coded so you can see what's stacked.
Sliders: Stability, Similarity, Style (0–1), plus a Speaker Boost toggle. Takes runs 1–4; the button reads Generate or Re-voice depending on which mode is active. Kept takes conform to 48 kHz / 24-bit and are named from the voice plus a four-word slug of your text, with any audio tags stripped from the filename.
Voice Isolator
One job, no settings: drop a file, get back a clean vocal.
Drop one file, or several — the Isolator queues them one at a time with an “N of M” progress strip, and Cancel drops the rest of the queue with it. Accepts MP3, WAV, AIFF, M4A, or a video file (the audio track is pulled automatically). The result is conformed to 48 kHz / 24-bit and named from a five-word slug of the source filename.
Transcribe
Speaker-labeled transcripts with a follow-along player, plus a watch folder for hands-free bounces.
Drop a file — it queues behind a running job the same way the Isolator does. Toggle Label Speakers on for diarization; each detected speaker gets a colored chip you can click to rename in place. Playback follows along underneath the transcript: click any word to seek there, and the current word highlights as it plays.
Words are grouped into speaker turns, each stamped with a start and end timecode. Short backchannels — “mmhm,” “right,” an elongated “uhhh” — fold quietly into the surrounding turn whenever the same speaker talks on both sides of them, so a genuine short reply never gets swallowed by mistake. ⌘= / ⌘- zoom the transcript type. A .txt transcript saves alongside the audio automatically; Copy and Show in Finder appear once one exists.
Point Transcribe at a folder — Settings ▸ Folders — and anything that lands there, like a Pro Tools bounce, transcribes itself automatically, queueing if a job's already running. Turn on “Copy transcript to clipboard on finish” and the result lands on your clipboard the moment it's done. The status line at the bottom of the tab always shows whether it's on, with a link straight to the setting.
Working Across Multiple Accounts
For the optional AI tools: add as many ElevenLabs accounts as you need, then decide independently which one each kind of generation bills to.
Add, rename, or remove accounts in Settings ▸ Accounts (you can't remove your last one). Both role switches only appear once a second account exists. Switching the Generation account refetches the Voice tab's voice list, since voices belong to the account that made them.
Settings
Nine chip-tabbed pages in one floating panel. Every change saves the instant you make it — there's no OK button.

Accounts
Covered in full under Working Across Multiple Accounts — your ElevenLabs accounts, and which one Generation and Transcription each use.
Folders
Four of them — SFX, Voice, Isolator, Transcript — each its own path field with a Choose… button next to it. Every kept take is conformed to 48 kHz / 24-bit WAV; uncompressed source needs an ElevenLabs Pro tier, otherwise Pegbox falls back to MP3.
Turns on the watch folder below it and lights a small green dot once it's actively watching. Point it at, say, a Pro Tools bounce folder and every new file there transcribes itself.
The finished transcript lands on your clipboard the moment the watch folder produces one — nothing to open or copy by hand.
| Type | Prefix | Suffix |
|---|---|---|
| SFX | EL_ | — |
| Voice | EL_ | — |
| Isolator | EL_ | _clean |
| Transcript | — | _transcript |
Audio
Used by everything Pegbox plays: Workspace auditions, the Sampler, and every generator preview. Pick a Loopback device here to record the Sampler straight into Pro Tools.
Decides what arrow-key browsing does in Workspace. On, it auditions the tile you land on. Off, it selects silently — Space still plays whatever's selected.
The on/off switch for the gain-matched copy Spot can write into your session, aimed at −32 dBFS RMS. Auditions themselves are always leveled either way.
Sampler
Exclusive by design — pick one device so nothing else can fire pads by accident.
Holds the live 4×4 note map. Turn Learn on, click a pad, hit its note on your controller, and Pegbox advances to the next pad automatically. Each pad keeps its own note independently, so any custom Maschine (or other controller) layout works. MIDI only fires pads while the Sampler tab is on screen.
| 13 B2 | 14 C3 | 15 F#3 | 16 G3 |
| 9 G2 | 10 A2 | 11 G#3 | 12 A3 |
| 5 E2 | 6 F2 | 7 A#3 | 8 C#3 |
| 1 C2 | 2 D2 | 3 F#2 | 4 D#3 |
Recording the Sampler into Pro Tools goes out through a Loopback interface and back in, and that round trip bakes a fixed delay into the take. Spot places the clip that many milliseconds to the left of the insertion point to cancel it out, so it lands where you actually performed it. Calibrate it once: spot a take with the offset at 0, see how late it landed, set that number, and leave it. It only affects Sampler takes — spotting from the Workspace is unaffected.
Pro Tools transport
Pick one: Off, Pro Tools Scripting (PTSL — no setup needed), HUI (MIDI Controller), or MMC (Machine Control). Pro Tools Scripting is the recommended path — a status light shows connection state and the current session name (with a track count, e.g. “21 spottable tracks in the session”), alongside Reconnect and Refresh Tracks buttons.
A separate switch from the transport protocol above: Pro Tools Scripting or Legacy Spot API. See Two ways to reach Pro Tools under Workspace for what each one actually does.
On by default. A spot takes whichever free bound track has gone longest since its last clip — an empty one first — so scenes step down the tracks instead of butting together on one. Turn it off to always take the first track in the list with room instead.
Off by default. The Legacy route no longer brings Pro Tools forward on its own, and Pegbox takes focus back if the Scripting route steals it — turn this on to restore the old behavior of switching to Pro Tools after every spot.
Binds a Workspace category to an ordered list of Pro Tools tracks. A category with no binding keeps the old behavior and spots wherever the cursor is; a subcategory can also simply inherit its parent's list, shown as “(inherited)” next to the track names. Changes save the moment you make them.
Exact Peripherals setup steps and the port name Pegbox listens on, a link-status light, and a Diagnostics section — Send Play/Stop, a port-probe stepper, a live log of what Pro Tools sends back.
A virtual port or an external MIDI destination, a Device ID (0–127), a repeat count, a deferred-play toggle — and diagnostics that include a “Try All IDs” sweep and a binary-search wizard that finds the ID your Pro Tools actually answers on.
Workspace
Picks the provider for AI tile art: GPT Image Mini (~$0.005/image) or Gemini — Pegbox notes that GPT Image Mini is roughly 8× cheaper and generally sharper for these tiles.
Pay-as-you-go, and separate from a ChatGPT Plus subscription. Get one at platform.openai.com/api-keys.
Generates a picture per sound from its file description. Get one at aistudio.google.com.
Neither provider exposes account spend to an ordinary API key — OpenAI needs a separate org Admin key, and Gemini only reports usage through Google Cloud Monitoring — so check spend in their own dashboards, not here.
Remote
Lists every iPad that's connected before, each with its pairing date, live status, and a Forget button. The first time an iPad running Pegbox Remote connects, this Mac asks whether to allow it; Allow pairs it until you forget it here, and a forgotten iPad has to be allowed again from scratch.
Shows the name Pegbox advertises over Bonjour. Only devices on the local network can even ask to connect; anything else is refused before it gets the chance to prompt.
About
Version number, a link to the Pegbox website, and a support email link.
By design — MMC transport control can start playback and stop, but a Record command never goes out over that protocol.
The Insert Chain
A small floating plug-in rack: audition a category through real plug-ins, and Spot bakes the result in.
Add any Audio Unit, reorder the chain, open each plug-in's own window, bypass one at a time or the whole chain, and save the chain as a named preset via the picker at the top (shown here as "Closed Window"). Workspace auditions play through it live. Spotting bakes it into the file written into your session — the filename and clip name carry the preset's name plus a hash of its settings, so a re-dialed EQ is never confused with an old render. Action-sound categories always spot dry, chain active or not. Plug-ins run out of process, so a crash in one can't take Pegbox down with it.
| E | Turn the whole chain on or off — the panel's Active switch. |
| ⌘⇧E | Bypass — keeps the chain loaded, just silences it, for a fast A/B. Same as the panel's Bypass checkbox or ⌥-clicking the toolbar EQ icon. |

When something goes wrong
- A permissions error on Spot opens straight to System Settings ▸ Privacy ▸ Automation — approve Pegbox there and try again.
- Spot can't reach Pro Tools. Spotting needs Pro Tools running with a session open. Without one Pegbox still works: drag any tile straight into Pro Tools, another editor, or the Finder. If a session is open and spotting still fails, Settings ▸ Pro Tools has a status light for the Scripting link, the session name it found, and a Reconnect button. Pro Tools older than 2025.6 has no Scripting spot commands at all, so every spot goes out through the Legacy Spot API instead — that route is the one that needs the Automation permission above.
- A tile showing offline just needs relinking: right-click it and choose Relink File…, or run Relink Offline Files for a whole pass — Pegbox uses Spotlight to find files that moved.
